Description
2027 Britannia Gold Coin 1 oz – 40th Anniversary Edition
The 2027 Britannia gold coin 1 oz marks the 40th anniversary of the Gold Britannia: 31.1035 g of 999.9 fine gold and a one-off ’40’ wave privy mark. The Royal Mint issued the first Gold Britannia in October 1987, in its own words the first significant development in UK gold coinage for over 150 years. For 2027, the design also adds a background texture that shows the anniversary number. The coin has a face value of £100 and a diameter of 32.69 mm.
The reverse carries Philip Nathan’s standing Britannia of 1987, with a shield for protection, an olive branch for peace and a trident for her connection with the sea. The obverse shows the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
Four visual security features
Since 2021, every Britannia bullion coin has carried four security features: micro-text, a latent image, tincture lines and surface animation. The latent image switches between a padlock and a trident as the coin is tilted. Laser-applied micro-text reading ‘DECUS ET TUTAMEN’ (‘an ornament and a safeguard’) surrounds the figure of Britannia. Tincture lines create the light and dark tones of the Union flag on her shield, and the surface animation produces waves that appear to roll behind Britannia when the coin is moved. They allow quick visual verification and make counterfeiting very difficult.
