Royal Mint, 2003 United Kingdom Gold Bullion Sovereign 50th Year Coronation Anniversary

2003 sees the return of the traditional St George & Dragon design which has been used on sovereigns, with a few breaks, since 1817, notably the shield reverse issued in 2002.

For 2003, the issue limit has been retained at a maximum of 100,000 of the uncirculated version, the same as for the previous two years, 15,000 individual proofs, and 7,500 proofs as part of 3 coin and 4 coin proof sets.

Obverse

The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It’s the fourth definitive UK coin portrait of Elizabeth II to be used on the coins.

Reverse

This coin features the traditional St George and the Dragon revese design by Benedetto Pistrucci. This design is probably the most iconic of the reverse designs and has been featured on most sovereigns since it was introduced in 1817.
