Description
The Royal Mint Silver Coin: The Angel 1 oz Silver 2026 is a modern bullion coin issued by The Royal Mint, inspired by one of the most fascinating motifs in the history of British coinage. The “The Angel” series refers to historical coins issued from the 15th century during the reign of Edward IV, whose distinctive symbol was the Archangel Michael fighting a dragon.
The coin was struck from one ounce of Ag.999 fine silver, with a weight of 31.61 g and a diameter of 38.61 mm. The issue has the status of an official British bullion coin and represents a contemporary interpretation of the historic “Angel,” once regarded as a protective coin and a symbol of good fortune.
In the past, Angel-type coins were associated with the so-called royal touch ceremonies. It was believed that the monarch could transmit divine grace through the coin to the sick, which is why these pieces were often worn as protective amulets. This modern issue preserves that historical symbolism while combining it with advanced minting technology.
Obverse, designed by Martin Jennings, features the official portrait of King Charles III together with the face value and royal legend.
Reverse, designed by Sandra Deiana, depicts a dynamic scene of the Archangel Michael battling a dragon, symbolizing evil. The design has been enhanced with a modern security pattern, providing increased protection against counterfeiting.
